EARLY MORNING MT NEBO II

Okay. Yes, this is the same painting. After I looked at it for a few days--which I normally do with all of my paintings--I decided to make a few modifications. (With watercolor that is sometimes difficult to do as any watercolorist knows) You can compare this with the previous. (15" x 22")

EARLY MORNING MT NEBO

Autumn colors are my favorites, especially yellows. When morning or afternoon light filters through multi-colored leaves they scintillate with unmatched beauty; for me it's almost a glimpse of celestial illumination, or what I imagine such light to be. Although the yellows in this photo are close, they are not quite the same as those in the original painting. For some reason the camera (probably the flash) made them orange rather than the cool yellows I used: lemon yellow. (15" x 22")

CATHEDRAL GORGE

Cathedral Gorge is a small state park in Eastern Nevada. Known for its interesting formations it is one of the more popular state parks in the state. This painting is one of a handful that I've painted on a full sheet of watercolor paper. (22" X 30")

ANOTHER ONE FOR IAN ROBERTS

I recently purchased Ian Roberts's book Mastering Composition. This gem contains many landscape paintings, and although Roberts seems to be primarily an oil painter, the principles he explains apply to any two-dimensional art medium. I've enjoyed reading it and intend to refer to it often. (See Miscellaneous: Creative Authenticity.)

I like the arrangement of these boulders. They fell a long way from the top of the rock face in the background.

DRAGON MOON

Although my blog is primarily a site for my artwork, I also take many reference photos and some that just strike my imagination. I snapped this picture from my front porch one evening.

GHOST OF THEATER PAST

This old theater is located in downtown Caliente, Nevada. The establishment closed its doors for the final time back in the early 1970s. Since then it has been purchased by the city of Caliente, but so far nothing has been done with it except a quick paint job. At one time, I heard it was to be renovated and used for live theater, but I suppose priorities have relegated this project to the bottom of the list. (11" x 15") No longer in my collection.

ROCK REFLECTIONS

Duck Creek is a beautiful location. In fact, most of Cedar Mountain is noteworthy for its beauty. This includes Brianhead, Panguitch Lake, and Cedar Breaks where you can see the pinnacles of far-off Zion Park. (22" x 15")

MORNING CHILL

I made a correction concerning this painting. My son took the reference photo and sent it to me over six years ago. I painted the scene sometime in 2002, and promised it to him when he had a place of his own. (That's still pending) The location is actually Heidenheim, Germany and not Austria as I mistakenly indicated before. No big deal except for Jeff and me. (22" x 15")  No longer in my collection.

SNOW CANYON OVERLOOK

(11" x 15")

BROKE DOWN

This painting is also over 20 years old. This ancient clunker was parked but half a block from my home. To me it seemed like an antique even twenty years ago. If I recall, there was much more junk around it than what I placed in the scene. (11" x 15")

PARKER, ARIZONA, LOOKING SOUTH

So as to clear up any confusion, this Parker is not the town/city of Parker located south of Lake Havasu, but rather it's a small ranch in the House Rock Valley located near the Vermillion Cliffs east of Jacob Lake. (just off the Kaibab)

BORED

I painted this scene from Zion Park well over twenty years ago. I don't know if this park enterprise (horseback riding) still exists, and I'm sure all of the animals shown have gone to the happy grazing grounds. I was waiting for someone at the time, and as I observed this particular horse I felt I could almost read it's thoughts. I kept hearing things in my mind like, "Dumb tourist, never seen a horse before," and "Don't you have anything better to do?" I swear he/she was communicating with me through some sixth-sense medium. A polluted pool near Etna. Someone had thrown several railroad ties and a couple of 55 gallon drums over the side of a bank beside the road and down into this small pool. It had a kind of surreal menacing beauty. (11" x 15

PIOCHE MINE

Pioche is a small town in eastern Nevada. I like to call it a living ghost town. So as not to offend anyone from that community I'll explain what I mean. Several hundred people call Pioche home, (the Lincoln County courthouse and telephone company are both located there.) What makes Pioche interesting is that many of its original 19th century buildings still exist, and some are even being used. Thus Pioche retains an atmosphere of the real Old West. On its main street you can find a museum, a former opera house, several vintage stores, a couple of saloons, and a small art gallery (that may or may not be open.) An Old West cemetery still exists with original inscriptions and humorous epitaphs. In the mountains surrounding Pioche one can find many old mines and mine shafts. Caution must be used when exploring these areas. Pioche is an interesting place to visit. Most services are available there, or they can be found in nearby towns. This painting is no longer in my collection. (15" x 11")

HOLSTEN TOR

This structure is located in Lubeck, Gemany. Lubeck was one of the Hanseatic League centers. In its hayday, the old city was surrounded by a wall, and this is the one surviving "gate" that allowed entrance to the city.
