GLIDER WEATHER

Northern France, somewhere between Metz and Paris. Gliders were soaring near a small town along the route. (15" x 22")

COVE MEMORIES

At one time it was a bar, then it became someone's home and was commonly referred to as the bottle house because of an array of decorative bottles prominently displayed in a front window, and now it's an empty house sitting next to highway 93. (15" x 22")

DEMONSTRATION

My palette along with my favorite brushes. The brush on the palette is an ancient squirrel hair (cheapo) brush, but it's a favorite because it glides over the painting surface.

After completing the drawing and sponging both sides with copious amounts of water, I place the half sheet of 140 lb Arches cold press paper on a piece of masonite.

After the paper has soaked for five or ten minutes I tilt the board and allow the excess water to drain off. Then I place paper towels the length of the paper.

Any excess moisture I dab with the towels.

I start by painting the foliage with New Gamboge.

Now I work on the foreground rock formation using Yellow Ochre and a bit of Colbalt Blue and Alizarin Crimson to gray the yellow. Notice that I've attached the paper to the masonite board with bulldog clips. I've tried tape, staples, the plastic edging you attach with a rubber mallet, but for me the clips work best.

Next, I work wet-in-wet on the background mountains using Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, and a tiny bit of Viridian and Alarizin Crimson.

I now work on the greens using Hookers Green, Viridian, Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, and more Gamboge.

I finish the greens by dropping thick paint into areas that are still wet. Finally, I wash in the sky with Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, and a bit of Thalo Blue. After a couple of hours here in the low humidity, I can take it off the board.

This is another grandson. His name is Davis and he lives in Utah. He's three years old and loves his markers (and this borrowed easel.) Here is his family portrait: Mom is the yellow circle, Dad is the long one at the top, and Davis is the third one. Our daughter says they are either all happy sunshines or very hairy.
